On a site located within the green belt of West Hallam, MNCN Architecture were commissioned to work as the architect to redesign an existing, outdated bungalow from concept through to technical design/building regulations drawings (RIBA Stage 4).

Working alongside the Client, it was apparent that there would be three pillars to the project: modernise and thermally upgrade the exterior, modernise and open-up the interior and create an additional storey to give a panoramic view of the surrounding scenery (see images below).

The material palette on the exterior was kept clean, simple and modern with render and expanses of glazing to the rear to take in the aforementioned views.

Internally, an open-plan hub was created on the ground floor with then kitchen, living and dining areas combined with a rear sun room connecting to the garden space. On the new upper floor, a spacious master suite with feature glazing and a balcony was created, the centrepiece of the project. This coupled with improved amenities and efficient use of space resulted in an order-of-magnitude improvement.

We’re proud to see today that all involved with the project have ultimately created a home of architectural merit and functionality that the site within West Hallam and the scenic surroundings deserve.
