Running alongside our Home Farm project in Long Eaton, the Client commissioned us as the architectural designer to carry out a feasibility study on an Attenborough Lakes leisure and eco-tourism development in 2020. The brief was simple; to create a site with recreation and leisure as it’s focus, adding to the nearby Spring Lakes Development and Attenborough Nature Centre as eco-tourism gateways in to the adjacent Attenborough Nature Reserve.

To follow but not replicate the aforementioned attractions, our proposal for the site took the form of a camping/glamping development, along with ancillary elements including a children’s play area, fishing ponds and a central hub with changing/washing/shopping facilities.

Site layout followed the principles of maintaining as much openness as possible (critical within the green belt), maintaining existing links to the nature reserve and creating a variety of activities and camping options from individual tents to 6-bed glamping pods.

The concept of the central hub was designed to minimise it’s visual impact on the surrounding nature reserve/green belt zone. For this, it would be single-storey with a flat roof (potential for green/blue roof) and encompass a natural material palette such as timber cladding.

The final design for the Attenborough Lakes Development creates a positive addition to the surround green belt zone and nature reserve. Bringing opportunities for the local economy in terms eco-tourism and employment while creating an extra, more integrated, way for people to enjoy the wider nature reserve.
