Following concept design (if necessary), a project can move forward to the planning stage. This is the first stage that requires an official architect’s drawing package to be submitted to the local authority for mandatory approval.

The obtainment of planning approval is absolutely critical to the progression of the majority of building projects, however, there are a few exemptions such as small porches, conservatories and loft conversions (see here).

At this stage a project’s general design and how it compliments the related plot is communicated to the local authority (via drawings such as those above). This is all to give planners the insight required to sign off the official approval needed to move forward to the next stage of a project’s lifecycle; building regulations.
